Hiroshi Murata is a self-employed artist. He was educated at Rhode Island School of Design where he received a BFA in 1964 and at Yale University School of Art and Architecture where he received his MFA in 1966.  Since his retirement as a Professor in the Art Department at The College of New Jersey in 1991, Murata has been at work on numerous public commissions. Prior to his 19-year tenure at The College of New Jersey, Murata was an Associate Art Professor at Western Michigan University, from 1966 to1970.  He is also the recipient of various grants and fellowships.

As the member of a three artist team, Murata performed artwork design, including off-site freestanding sculpture, finials, column and railing tile designs and newel posts, for the nineteen train stations between Trenton and Camden on NJ Transit's planned southern NJ Light Rail System. In addition, Murata has completed artwork for numerous individual commissions including The Ride ceramic tile mural at Newark Penn Station, Arts Medicinalis wood marquetry panels at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, Tilt, a welded aluminum sculpture, for Rutgers University in Newark, Resolution wood marquetry panels for the State of New Jersey: State House Annex, and Space Garden, a painted metal mural, for Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC.  Since 1969, Murata's work has been featured in solo exhibitions in both Japan and the United States.
