Born in 1951, Gary Komarin has studied with master abstract expressionist painter Phillip Guston at Boston University, where he earned his MFA in painting and served as a Graduate Teaching Fellow.  He also studied at the Brooklyn Museum School in 1975, the New York Studio School, and received his BA in Art and English Literature from Albany State University.  He is the recipient of numerous major awards including the prestigious Joan Mitchell Prize in Painting, Edward Albee Foundation Fellowship, and Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts grant.  Throughout his career, he has held various teaching positions and has lectured at universities all across the country.

In 2000, the New York Times wrote: “Seemingly imprecise in their imagery, austere in palette, self-absorbed in feeling, their surfaces gritty and un-ingratiating, Komarin's paintings can nevertheless become eloquent…the forms resonate when they are at once strange and familiar.”

Komarin has held exhibitions in both the United States and Europe, including Galerie Proarta in Zurich, Switzerland and The Fine Art Society in London, England.  His work has been acquired for the collections of AT&T, Microsoft, Continental Airlines, McDonalds Corporation, and Prudential Insurance Co. of America.  In 1996, he was teamed with his influential mentor in the highly successful exhibition entitled Traylor, Guston, Basquiat, Komarin at the John McEnroe Gallery in New York City.  His work is represented by the Karolyn Sherwood Gallery and the Lowe Gallery.
