Great Expectations (Sleep My Love)

Grace Graupe-Pillard received her BA from City College of NY and studied at the City University of NY and the Art Students League.  She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Center for Innovative Printmaking, and two fellowships from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Of her work, Grace Graupe-Pillard states that “…I began working on a series entitled Great Expectations combining painting and photographs which incorporates film stills from some of the great cinematic 'masterpieces' of our era,” says Graupe-Pillard. “I speak to the power of film to revise, reinvent and re-position history and historical figures within popular culture, as well as to shape our view of romance, love and life's other 'big' events.”  Curator Okwui Enwezor writes: “Pillard's feminist oriented paintings look at questions of female desire and the struggle over the control of a woman's body in the face of patriarchal dispossession... evincing a kind of compacted and mediated rage and melancholy; they depict bodies in states of utter vulnerability. Her boldly painted work... are deployed in an ironic play of signifiers which serve as apt commentaries on cultural and sexual appropriation, pillage and domination as much as they address key questions of artistic postmodern subjectivity.”

Grace Graupe-Pillard has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States.  Her work is also featured in various public collections.  She has received public art commissions from Shearson Lehman American Express, AT&T, Peat Marwick, Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC, Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, and the City of Orange, NJ.  Other projects include commissions from NJ Transit for the new Hudson Bergen Light Rail System and the Matawan Station in Matawan, NJ.
