Diosmel Gonzalez was born in Las Villas, Cuba in 1970.  Gonzalez moved to the United States in 1993 to pursue an artistic career in New York City.  He received a BA in Art and Art Education from Parsons School of Design, his MA from Kean University, and received his MFA from New Jersey City University.  Gonzalez is presently an Adjunct Professor at Kean University.

He states, “My intention in the work is to capture the essence of religions that deal with the worship of idols. Each sculpture takes the form of a cone, a religious icon often found in West African cultures, and later imported to the Americans. These forms present a round surface where I engrave lines and signs, a common element in my two-dimensional work.” In his work, he also utilizes architectural themes to explore social and political issues.  He is in constant search for new ways of artistic expression, both in style and means.  His search has led him to create uniform compositions where he engraves ritualistic symbols in an effort to portray an organic, confined two-dimensional world.

His work has been exhibited at numerous locations including the Andre Zarre Gallery in Chelsea, NY, Jadite Gallery in NYC, the James Howe Gallery in Union, NJ, and at the 2002 New Jersey Arts Annual at the Jersey City Museum. His work has also been featured in publications, as well as private collections.
