And All That's In Between
Acrylic & Oilstick on Paper
29" x 40" each, (2 Panels)

Dahlia Elsayed attended the Center for Book Arts and received a BA from Barnard College and her MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts with independent study in Book Art with Archie Rand.  Elsayed was an Artist-in-Residence at the Center for Contemporary Art in Yerevan, Armenia, Guest Lecturer at the Newark Museum, and received a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship Award. She has produced various works influenced by her visits to Egypt and Armenia, where her parents were born.

Elsayed's images are based on her close relationship to text and, specifically, to the personal act of keeping a diary.  Her abstracted figures become like signs for the human body and carriers of the deeper meanings she alludes to in her texts. Like overheard conversations, the speech bubbles seen in her work are provocative, asking us to stop, read, and fill in the imagined information.  Of her work she states, “Since 1995, I have been working in my studio in a turn of the century silk mill, in New Jersey. Much of my work draws on my surroundings, informed by autobiography and environment, and is always aware of the dynamic between content and medium. The elements of text and color are used to construct maps of internal and external geographies, and to document a personal landscape. The most recent works are paintings that are driven by dialogues - specifically they are abstracted figures with speech boxes capturing moments of interaction. The two panels form a kind of plot movement or action.”

Dahlia Elsayed's work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions including the Jersey City Museum, Armenian Library and Museum of America in Watertown, MA, and the Gallery Of South Orange.  Her group exhibitions include the Beacon Street Gallery in Chicago, The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Battery Park, NY, Locust Projects in Miami and City Without Walls Gallery in Newark.
