Ellen Eagle is a pastel portrait artist. She was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy School of Fine Arts, both in New York.  She earned a BFA with Distinction from the California College of Arts and Crafts.  Eagle has earned many honors, including three First Place awards from the Allied Artists of America's Annual Juried Exhibitions, in the category of pastels.  She has also won the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Award, Edward Mooney Traveling Scholarship Award, John Young Hunter Memorial Award, a full residency fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, and numerous others.

Ellen Eagle was discovered by Forum Gallery director, Robert Fishko, during the 2000 juried exhibition at the National Academy of Design.  Fishko was immediately drawn to her delicate, subtle, yet thoroughly solid portrait.  Having mastered such a difficult medium, Eagle’s pastel portraits accurately portray her sitter’s likeness, while also capturing the soul of each subject she encounters. We are compelled by these pieces, returning to them again and again, each time discovering another layer of the sitter’s psyche. Eagle’s self portraits are also remarkable.  Never “dressing herself up,” she truthfully depicts each flaw, exposing the vulnerabilities within herself.  While most of her models avert their eyes, with heads turned or facing down, Eagle’s self-portraits always show the artist looking at the viewer straight on, as if to directly engage them.  These drawings contain the same unspoken, mysterious narrative of her other works, but in her self-portraits, she invites us in.  We are no longer voyeurs peering into the lives of her subjects, but rather, she becomes the seer and we the audience.

She is the author of the articles, “An Elegant Unrest” and “Composing a Life,” both published in LINEA, Journal of the Arts Students League of New York.  Her paintings have been the subject of several magazine articles including American Artist (December 2004), and the cover article for The Pastel Journal (June 2006). The Artist’s work is also featured in The Classical Drawing Atelier: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Studio Practice, by Juliette Aristides, published in 2006.  She currently teaches at the Art Students League and the National Academy School of Fine Arts.

Her work has been exhibited in the 1999 New Jersey Fine Arts Annual and at the Gallery of South Orange.  Solo exhibitions include the Lyme Academy, Concordia College Gallery in Bronxville, NY, and the Forum Gallery in New York, where she is represented.  She has participated in group exhibitions at numerous galleries and museums including The Everhart Museum in Scranton, PA, the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, The Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH, several juried annual exhibitions at the National Academy, Seraphin Gallery in Philadelphia, the National Pastel Society of America, and many others.  Her work is also included in many private and corporate collections.
