Born in Liverpool, England, Vicky Culver was awarded a BS in Graphic Design, Photography and Communications from Manchester College of Art & Design in 1969.  She designed publicity materials and books for the publisher Longman, until moving to Canada in 1974.  Continuing to work as a designer for New Designs, various Departments of the Canadian Government, and Banfield Advertising, Culver then established her own freelance partnership in Ottawa in 1982.  A resident of New Jersey since 1987, Culver has participated in hundreds of group shows and is an exhibiting member of the Guild of Creative Art, the Art Alliance of Monmouth County, the Arts Society of Monmouth County, the Freehold Art Society, the Monmouth Festival of the Arts, Princeton Art Group, and the Visual Arts League. She is also a member of the Monmouth County Arts Council and has won numerous awards, both local and national.

Of her art, Culver explains that “I strive to hand-craft works that command attention, draw the viewer in, stirring imagination as well as emotion; unique works that move beyond the photo becoming more than the sum of their parts. In 1998, I began to explore different ways of allowing my collages to take on a third dimension, either by including three-dimensional objects and other materials, or by the use of ‘trope-l'oeil’. Some collages are from a premeditative idea, while others take me on a journey of their own. In each situation though, I pay close attention to subject matter, color, texture and lighting. My Double Exposure series contrasts the intricacy of natural geometry (as in the skin of a snake) or man-made textures (such as lace), with the simplicity of the human form. Nature-based pieces are intended to soothe the soul, whereas my Trauma series intrigues and disquiets the viewer.”

She has exhibited with Mary Phillips at the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center, Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, the Monmouth Festival of the Arts, and Brookdale Community College.  Solo shows include exhibits at Art & Attic in Red Bank, NJ, the PNC Bank in Howell, the Guild of Creative Art in Shrewsbury, Poricy Park in Middletown, the Black Box in Asbury Park, and Metuchen Public Library.
