Zhiyuan Cong, a professor of the Art Department of William Paterson University, earned his MFA degree in Printmaking from Indiana University in 1994.  Before his arrival in the United States, he earned both a MFA in 1986 and a BFA in 1980 in Chinese Painting from the Nanjing Arts Institute in China.  He has received fellowship residencies at the East-West Center and as guest artist at the Chicago Art Institute.  He was also a consultant and project coordinator for the Indianapolis Museum of Art for a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and was a director of the Summer Art in China program at William Paterson in 2001.

He has taught at William Paterson University since 1994.  He has been a professor at Nanjing College of Arts from 1980 to 1988, and a guest artist at the Chicago Arts Institute in 1992, as well as an instructor at Indiana University from 1989 to 1994.  His art demonstrations and lectures include Princeton University, UC Berkeley, the University of Oregon, and the Chicago Art Institute.  Cong has received reviews of his work from The New York Times, NBC and CNN. His work has also earned him several awards for “Best of Show”, Contemporary Prints Exhibition in 1999 and “Best in Show”, Imaging New Jersey in 1995. He also received the First Place Award at the American States Arts Competition in Indianapolis in 1993 as well as the Outstanding Works Award for the National Committee of the International Youth Year in Beijing in 1985.

Cong's exhibitions range from local galleries to national and international museums and exhibition spaces. These include the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Art Museum of Indiana University, the New Jersey State Museum, the Newark Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, Bergen Museum, McDonough Museum of Art in Ohio, Art Gallery of St. John's University in New York, Elizabeth Wang Gallery in New York, Fine Art Gallery of Lane Community College in Oregon, Nanjing Museum and Qinghai Provincial Museum in China, and the National Art Museum in Beijing, China.
