A native of Suffern, New York, Giovanna Cecchetti received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in 1976 and received her MFA from William Paterson University, exploring painting and new technologies, including digital manipulations of paintings and digital video.

Cecchetti's Circle Meditation works are extractions of areas from previous paintings. Through the repetitive act of painting each circle, as one watches one's breath in meditation, these paintings become tones of being and receptacles for energy.  First the canvas is coated using a black gesso that is then followed by washed over dark pearlescent tones of color. Using thinned paint, rows of circles are brushed in, sometimes following the shapes of the dark undertones. Cecchetti layers glazes of circles upon circles, in a process that is constantly deleting and recreating itself. By this, the illusion of depth on the picture plane is created in a reflection of light, which causes visual shifts between the painting's undertones and its surface.

Of her work, Cecchetti states: “Art making is my way to channel my energy…and, my painting or my drawing is a receptacle for this energy.” This focus on “art making” is directly related to how Cecchetti sees herself as a process-driven artist: “It is not my goal only to work towards finishing pieces, because my interest lies in a passion for the journey and the healing brought about by the process. I do have a personal need to create complexity out of simplicity.” Her work has been on display in both group and solo exhibitions at many prominent venues in the region, including City Without Walls and Aljira in Newark, the Hunterdon Museum of Art, and the Midland Gallery in Montclair.
