Fran Bull’s life was inspired and defined by her childhood study at the Newark Museum in New Jersey.  She received her BA in Painting from Bennington College in Vermont, her MA in Fine Art and Education from New York University, and took classes in textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.  She has received numerous awards, including from the Printmaking Council of New Jersey.  Bull has received a Certificate of Merit at the 7th Annual Feed the Body, Feed the Soul Competition in Hamilton, Ohio and an award from the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

She began her career in the late 1970's exhibiting at the Louis K. Meisel Gallery in New York City. At this time the focus of her work was photorealism.  In 1986, after a self-imposed retreat to rural Ireland, Bull began developing an art which addressed internal vision and mythic allusion. The paintings from this period, whether expressionistic or abstract, emanated from landscapes and scenarios in Bull's inner world. This focus continues to the present day, inviting viewers into realms of vivid color, biomorphic form and provocative narrative. Her images combine rich hues with free-ranging shapes and maverick linearities to suggest a myriad of events ranging from the vicissitudes of daily life to the grandeur of cosmic drama. Bull's art may be seen as an expressionist exploration, one that seeks to connect the mundane to larger mythic and historical motifs, themes and narratives.

Fran Bull's works have been shown in numerous solo exhibitions including the Morgan Gallery in Kansas City, MS, the Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Charleston, SC, and Trans Hudson Gallery in New York, NY.  She has participated in group exhibitions at the Walter Wickiser Gallery in New York, the Printmaking Council of New Jersey, and the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. Bull has also taught at Norwich University in Vermont, University of Wisconsin, Towson State University in Maryland and New York University.
