Serena Bocchino received her Masters from New York University.  She has been given recognition from many institutions, including New York City's Artists Space, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center and the Museum of Modern Art. The Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper have awarded Bocchino Fellowship grants.  In 2002, she received a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship Award.  Her themes include the visual interpretations of American jazz and the energies of the urban landscape.  She is inspired by the spiritual aspects of music, specifically jazz.  Bocchino's paintings and drawings are abstract entities translating the compositional, spontaneous and rhythmic qualities of music into a two-dimensional form.

Barry Schwabsky of the New York Times, in a full-page review of her work, stated: “Part of the pungency of her paintings is the way they insinuate half-forgotten sights and sounds into a vividly immediate contest… The feeling that within these paintings everything is in transition, that none of their elements have become too strictly defined, may be exactly what keeps them fresh.”

New York City galleries began showing Serena Bocchino’s work in 1985.  Since then, US and international galleries and museums, such as Exhibit A in New York, Art Haus in California, Jeffrey Coploff Fine Art Ltd. and Sears/Peyton in New York, the State Museum in New Jersey, Princeton University, Studio Bocchi in Rome, Italy, and Galerie du Tableau in Marseilles, France, have featured her work in solo and group exhibitions.  Paintings and drawings by Serena Bocchino have been acquired by private and corporate collectors worldwide.
