Born and raised in Bulgaria, Vesselin Kourtev received a high school degree in Fine Art from the Fine Art school in Kazanluk, as well as his MFA degree from The Faculty of Fine Art at the University of Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria. From 1989 until 2002, Vesselin worked for the National School of Stage and Film Design in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In the years following, he remained active within the Bulgarian art community and participated in a large number of national and international exhibitions and competitions. He founded the Alfa Art Gallery in 2007 after moving to New Jersey five years prior and is now head Art Director and Resident artist at the gallery.

Kourtev writes: "My work reflects an admiration for human relations. With the beauty of nature surrounding us every day, what would it be without the observation of people? The idea of Love has dated back from the beginning of man, and continues to survive as a universal concept. As human beings, I feel it is our duty to continue to explore not what separates us, but what we can all relate with.

"The longer one observes my works, the more it begins to reveals itself; quite similar to the development of a new relationship, friendly or romantic. The inclusion of religious type figures, seen in my watercolor/collage pieces, expresses an attempt to examine human relations throughout different centuries. Knowing the past is essential analyzing what is happening in today's world.

Trained in traditional European style painting, I have always worked towards the goal of keeping these methods while building a unique style. Similar to the common idea of an artists' "series", my work is grouped in "cycles", a more active an efficient categorization method to observe the shift in style and concept over time.

My home country, Bulgaria, has been a constant presence in my work. Past experiences, people, and ideas still filter through my consciousness, into the imagery. Relocating to the United States, I found human interactions differ, but love and sadness are present anywhere you go, maybe, in different forms. It is irrelevant to question what these symbols, lines, or shapes mean, but how the viewer interprets them, and how it can lead to whole different story.
