Born in New York City in 1949, Aileen Bassis is a self-taught photographer and began working in photography in 1975, after receiving a BA in Studio Art from SUNY Binghamton in 1971 where she concentrated on drawing, graphics, and painting. She received her MA in Creative Art from Hunter College in 1976.  She first exhibited her work in 1977 at Foto Gallery in NYC.  Bassis received a Fellowship in Photography from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in l999, a residency in 2002 to the Frans Masereel Graphic Center in Belgium, a Dodge Fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center in 2004 and a residency to the Nelimarkka Museum in Finland in 2006.

She uses her photographs to create groups of altered books, handmade books, monoprints, and installations. Regarding her work, she states: “…for the past several years, my work has centered around areas that I personally find frightening - disease (AIDS and breast cancer), hatred, anti-Semitism, child abuse, and most recently, psychiatric drugs for children,” Bassis says. “I look at these issues as personal fears that spiral into the political and general social realm. My work functions to focus attention to these issues and personalize my concerns.” In addition, she has produced work fueled by the atrocities of the war in Iraq, 9/11, and social inequities between the races.

She has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in museums, galleries and colleges including the Jersey City Museum, Queens Museum, the Hunterdon Museum of Art, Gallery 1101 at the University of Southern Illinois, Morehead State University in Kentucky, Passaic County Community College's Broadway Gallery, Raritan Valley Community College, City Without Walls in Newark, and in New York City galleries including Ceres Gallery, Sylvia White Gallery, and NurtureArt Gallery.  Bassis is also an art educator and teaches students with special needs.
