"Although I have worked in many media -- watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, and printmaking -- most recently I have been drawing with Staedtler fine-line archival markers on Arches 140-pound hot-press watercolor paper. The Staedtler nib is deliciously smooth, the ink is intensely black, and these pens allow me to lay down incredibly subtle variations of line onto the silky surface of the heavy Arches paper. I use a limited number of marks -- stippling, scribbling, lines of varying lengths, tiny circles - which have come to feel like a personal vocabulary. I usually work in series, ending up with many variations on whatever idea I'm trying to work out.it always feels like my subjects choose me: a huge bucket of pussywillows  at the grocery store; a tiny bit of pine-tree detritus left in the gutter; a picket fence; the line-up of pears on my kitchen windowsill. Animals are a recurring theme: stately cows, sinuous cats, knobby-legged horses, joyous dogs. Whatever it is, my camera comes out, and I start shooting from every angle, never sure what, if anything, the end result will be . . . but knowing I there's something there I want to explore.

"In composing each piece, my primary concerns are line, form, negative space, and balancing quiet versus active areas. I also try to let others see why my often-mundane subjects are important and worthy of their time and attention - not only in my drawings, but also in their everyday lives. My most recent abstract drawings and paper-work constructions bring with them everything my earlier work has taught me, but in these pieces the marks - and sometimes just the paper -- stand alone, and speak for themselves."
