Micro Drop I
Urethane on wood
1.5” x 1.5”

Metaphors for urgent environmental issues, Saraivy's work questions our relationships to those “things” perceived outside and remote from us. They question whether we, as viewers, can ever truly stand on the outside of something and critically judge it.  Playing on the parallels and duplicating relationships within all living systems, Saraivy wants the viewer to question if this is a microscopic drop or oceanic expanse. These aren’t serene worlds but what are they? Are the members of these communities dangerous or in danger? Under stress, these systems manifest themselves with predictable consequences.

Her paintings are made on wooden panels. The wood grain is often seen through the layers of water-based urethane and pigment glazes. The transparencies achieve relationships between the subject and the medium. The pigment layers create depth and color intensity.

Saraivy was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico in 1977. She moved to the U.S. 1985, and lived in Amherts MA until 1995. This is when she attended Massachusetts College of Art, in Boston MA. She graduated with a BFA in painting in 1999. After working and being inspired by jewelry artist Shellie Brooks she went into her own art full time, after Shellie’s death. A few years after moving to Jersey City, NJ, to be closer to more artistic opportunities, she began her MFA at Montclair State University which she completed in 2007.
