Mary Wickliffe began teaching herself to paint at age eleven and continued to paint throughout her early life, switching to acrylics and painting large canvases of abstract landscapes.  In 1974, Wickliffe stopped painting to return to school to receive her BA in art history from Drew University, where she wrote her honors thesis on Ancient Greek Art.  After earning her degree, she remained active in the field but did not paint for twenty-five years due to her work and family obligations. Today, she has returned to her roots and has begun creating again.

Wickliffe states, “My head is in a different place.  My abstract landscapes have given way to softer more natural subject.  I find great joy in the feel of the paint and I am grateful that after such a long time I can return to it.”

Wickliffe has volunteered for the Trailside Museum, Runnells Hospital Occupational Therapy Unit, and the Summit Junior League.  She has co-curated eighteen exhibitions and written and designed over a dozen accompanying catalogs for the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Wickliffe's works have been shown at numerous locations including the Summit Art Center, Garden State Arts Center, Fairleigh Dickenson University, and the Madison Public Library.
