LiQin Tan has portrayed his inventive and autodidactic energy as an artist, teacher, and researcher for decades while residing in China, Canada, Singapore and New Jersey.  He has taught art and computer 2D and 3D animation and graphics for over a decade across all college levels internationally. Currently, he is an assistant professor at Rutgers University. In addition, he has worked as an art director, animator, graphic designer and exclusive art editor in local and board industries over the past decades.

Named as “a conceptual artist who works with traditional brush-ink vocabulary” in his original country, he was one of the key players in the ‘85 New Art Trend in China. Since the year 2003, Tan’s art research has focused on merging the relationship among digital, primitive, and natural-based art along with the relevance of old and new technology, which has been called “Digital-Primitive/Natural Art.”  Of his work Tan explains, “My hope is that the ‘Digital-Primitive/Natural Art’ can transcend the traditional and modern uses of art elements and can result in integrating digital, primitive, and natural values in one manifestation.  As the ideologies and technologies of society change, today’s state-of-the-art technology will be tomorrow’s primitive skills. As a digital naturalist, I bring unity to the dichotomous by synthesizing cutting-edge digital technology and aesthetics with the fundamental primitive beauty of natural elements and the human bodies.”

Although he is often driven toward state-of-the-art technology, Tan remains devoted to the artistic world.  His works of art have been exhibited nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows and have received numerous awards.  His works have been displayed at SIGGRAPH-Art Gallery, Noyes Museum of Art, Shanghai DuoLun Museum of Modern Art, UK National Center for Computer Animation, Emin Hekimgil Art Gallery in Turkey, Noho Gallery in NYC , Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, London iV04 -06 Digital Art Gallery, Rutgers Stedman Art Gallery, Singapore Art Museum, William Paterson University Power Art Gallery, Concordia University V.A.V. Gallery, Maisons de la Culture in Montreal, and the National Art Museum in China.
