Janet Taylor Pickett was born in 1948 in Michigan.  She attended The University of Michigan School of Art and Design.  From there she graduated with a BFA and then went to Graduate School to receive a MFA, also from the University of Michigan.  She has also studied at Parsons School of Design, FIT, and the Vermont Studio School.  She is the recipient of various awards and honors.

She became supervisor of the Junior Museum of the Newark Museum in 1973. Then in 1974, she began teaching full time at Essex County College, where she became a full-time professor.  She retired from that position after over 30 years of teaching.  She is now teaching as an adjunct professor at Bloomfield College.

Pickett’s series of work, More Than One Way Home, was shown at the Montclair Art Museum in the late 1990’s. More Than One Way Home was a 25 year mid-career survey of the works of Janet Taylor Pickett. The exhibition and catalog showed how the artist had developed an individual style and iconography that is rooted in the personal, but speaks to the universal.  Janet Taylor Pickett works with mixed media, paper, canvas, and fiber.  Installations are also part of this artist's oeuvre. Her work is in numerous private and public commissions including the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, and Washington State Commission on the Arts.
